Richard Rohr recently posted a meditation reminding us that higher needs (goodness, beauty, truth) cannot be attained before lower needs (food, clothing, shelter) are tended to.  He put it this way....

When you cannot enjoy the lilies of the field or the sparrows in the sky, don’t waste time thinking you can enjoy God. Start at the bottom; try to love a rock. Otherwise, we end up trying to be spiritual before we have learned how to be human! It is a major problem.

Unfortunately, there is a spirituality in the land that bypasses being fully human in Christ.  The result is not only an artificiality (John Wesley called it "angelism"), but (in some cases) a dangerous ability to both pray for others while abusing them.  Never doubt that being healthy is a prerequisite for being holy.
